February is National Pet Dental Health Month, but here at Blum Animal Hospital, we like to focus on dental health year-round. While the most effective way to keep your pet’s teeth clean is brushing, here are some other products that can help with oral hygiene.
For felines, we offer Greenies in the Ocean Fish flavor. These treats help reduce tartar due to its shape and texture when your cat crunches on it. Each treat only contains 1.25 calories, so for a 10-lb. cat, they could receive 18 treats per day along with their regular diet.
For canines, we carry the Original Greenies that range in size from Teenie (5-15 lb. dog) to Large (51-100 lb. dog). Greenies help your dog’s teeth clean by fighting plaque and tartar buildup, and improving their breath all just by having them chew the treat! Greenies are easily digestible, but only one is recommended per day for dogs.
Most cats love CET Chews in either the poultry or fish flavors. These chews are great because they have a Dual-Enzyme System and also contain a freeze-dried fish component that helps clean cats’ teeth with the coarse texture.
At Blum we have two CET options for dogs – Enzymatic Oral Hygiene Chews and VeggieDents. The Enzymatic Oral Hygiene Chews also contain the Dual-Enzyme System and with their rough consistency helps keep your pup’s teeth clean and their breath smelling fresh. These poultry-flavored chews should only be given one time per day. The VeggieDents are a vegetable-based chew and contain no animal proteins. When given once a day, VeggieDents can help reduce plaque, freshen breath and help prevent tartar from forming.
These new chews made by Merial not only help clean your dog’s teeth and help freshen their breath, they also create a barrier that helps protect against plaque, tartar and halitosis with an ingredient called delmopinol. Oravet is the only dental product that contains this compound, which is released when your pup chews it. The way the Oravet chew is designed, helps also scrub away existing plaque and tartar. For these vanilla-scented chews to be most effective with reducing tartar and improving breath, they should ideally be given once a day.
Products for Felines and Canines
There are three products that we carry that help with oral hygiene for both cats and dogs. The first is called OralDent, which can either be used as an oral rinse or with a tooth brush to help remove food particles and other debris from your pet’s teeth. The OralDent is peppermint flavor, which helps keep your pet’s breath fresh.
Next, DentAcetic Dental Wipes can be used to rub your pet’s teeth and gums for dental cleaning and to help manage oral hygiene. By taking one of the cinnamon flavor wipes, rub it gently but firmly against your cat or dog’s teeth and gums.
Finally, the last product both cats and dogs can use to help with dental health is by feeding them Hill’s T/D. Per Hill’s, the nutrition in the food “helps to reduce plaque, stain and tartar buildup” along with the unique shape and size of the kibble. For dogs, there is a small bites option for dogs who weigh 20 lbs. and under. T/D is also a great option to give your pet as a treat.
