Blum’s Fear Free Gift Guide

With the holiday season upon us, we wanted to let everyone know about some products we carry that can help lessen your pet’s stress and anxiety during the festivities.

For dogs, we have a product called Adaptil that comes in a collar, diffuser or spray. According to the Ceva, the parent company, “Adaptil is a synthetic pheromone that mimics the pheromone mother dogs emit after giving birth to help their puppies feel calm and secure. Dogs of all ages recognize this pheromone throughout life.” Pheromones are chemical substances that dogs produce and absorb through the roof of the mouth that cause a calming sensation. In order for the Adaptil collar to be the most effective, your dog should wear it for 30 continuous days, and it should be close to their skin since it is activated by body heat. The diffuser should be placed in the room where your pet will spend most of his or her time during the holidays. The diffusers last for 30 days and cover up to 700 sq. feet. Adaptil sprays are great for localized areas and are effective for 4-5 hours. The recommended use is to apply 8-10 sprays 15 minutes prior to letting your pet sniff the sprayed area. The spray would be great to use to help your dog if they are in their crate or traveling in a car during the holidays.

Another great product for dogs with anxiety OF ANY KIND is a Thundershirt. It works similarly to swaddling a baby in that the pressure helps reduce persistent anxiety. We carry this product to fit most dogs, and we will be happy to help fit your pup with the appropriate size. The Thundershirt is great for fireworks and other noises associated with New Year’s Eve!

Finally, the last product we recommend to help your dog stay stress-free during the holidays is a Kong. This simple item is great because it can be filled with your dog’s favorite treats and frozen for a tasty snack. This can help distract your pup during holiday celebrations.

For cats, the comparable product to Adaptil is called Feliway, and it also comes in a diffuser or spray. Also per Ceva, “When a cat feels comfortable in their environment, they rub their cheeks against objects leaving a facial pheromone. Feliway is a synthetic copy of the feline facial pheromone used by cats to mark their territory as safe and secure.” Just like with Adaptil, the diffusers last for 30 days and cover up to 700 sq. feet, and the sprays are effective for 4-5 hours. The diffuser will be most effective in a room where your cat will be spending the most time. The spray is great to use if you must travel with your cat, and it can be sprayed in their carrier 15 minutes prior to putting them in.

We want to make sure the holidays are fun for everyone, including our furry family members. If you have any further questions about any of the Free Fear products we carry here, please call us at: (773) 327-4446.
