Think with Your Heart

Most dog owners know to give their dog a monthly heartworm preventative, but there are also some other important health benefits to this monthly tablet.

Blum Animal Hospital’s recommendation for heartworm prevention is a product called Interceptor Plus. We prefer to call this parasite prevention.  With just the once monthly chewable tablet, Interceptor Plus protects against heartworm disease and four intestinal parasites – hookworms, roundworms, whipworms and tapeworms. It is important to be vigilant about giving the Interceptor Plus every 30 days since hookworms and roundworms are zoonotic, meaning they can be passed on to humans from animals.

We recommend a yearly heartworm test, which is checked through a minimal blood test. Heartworm disease is transmitted when an infected mosquito bites your dog and transmits the heartworm larvae into their tissue. The larvae migrate through the tissue and into your dog’s bloodstream, and then eventually into their heart and pulmonary arteries. This whole process takes about 70 days after the initial mosquito bite. Sometimes your dog may display signs of coughing, lethargy or difficulty breathing if they are infected with heartworms; other times there may be no symptoms at all.

We recommend giving heartworm medication year-round for complete parasite prevention and to keep your dog and your human family healthy and protected! This way your dog will be completely protected no matter the season!
