What is your favorite part about being a veterinarian?

I love to see the bond between pets and their owners.  I am touched on a daily basis by how deeply loved my clients’ pets are.  It is a privilege to be trusted to care for these animals and it is a joy to keep someone’s best friend happy and healthy.

What is the most memorable case you worked on and why?

I will always remember a case I had in veterinary school on my emergency rotation.  It was a Lab mix named Max who got out of his yard and was hit by a car.  He had significant orthopedic and soft tissue injuries, and was in very rough shape when he arrived.  With a lot of work, we were able to get him healthy and back to his family.  It was the first case I worked on where I helped to bring a pet back from near-death and it was an amazing feeling.  I knew at that point that this was the only career for me!

Who is your biggest role model? Has this influenced how you practice medicine?

I have been fortunate to have many wonderful role models throughout my life, from excellent professors to veterinarians that have provided mentorship.  But above all, my parents have shaped the person, and veterinarian, I am today.  They taught me the importance of hard work and treating others with respect, which have been valuable lessons both at work and in life.

What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

As a teenager, I was on my high school’s downhill ski racing team.  That’s childhood in Michigan for you!

In your spare time, what is your favorite thing to do?

I love to hit the lakefront trail and go for a run, whether training for a race or just for fun.  Chicago has an amazing running community and it is so much fun to be a part of it!

Where do you like to go on vacation? Is there somewhere you want to go that you haven’t had a chance to travel to yet?

My family has a cottage on a small lake in northern Michigan and that is my favorite place in the world.  I’ve not had the opportunity to travel much outside of the United States, so my list of places to visit is long!  The Galapagos Islands are at the top of my list.
