What is your favorite part about being a veterinarian?

I like seeing a wide array of issues, from healthy animals to sick ones. It makes each day and every patient unique, while keeping every exam interesting in its own way…never knowing what to expect!

What is the most memorable case you worked on and why?

My most memorable case was a chocolate Labrador Retriever I cared for during my first surgery rotation in my fourth year of veterinary school. He had a bone tumor on one of his hind legs and needed to have the leg amputated. Although students are usually given the task of holding instruments during surgeries, I was allowed to do the amputation myself under the supervision of one of the residents. I was able to follow the dog through to an oncology rotation as he received chemotherapy. I again saw him during my anesthesia rotation while he had another surgery, to remove his spleen, and address the spread of his cancer. I was able to see him through many visits to the hospital, as well as form a bond with his owners.

Who is your biggest role model? Has this influenced how you practice medicine?

My family has always shaped the way that I was brought up and who I am today. I will probably make someone jealous if I just pick one person!

What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

I like to cook, and I share that hobby with my wife. We like to eat as well, so we enjoy going out to try new places.

In your spare time, what is your favorite thing to do?

At this point I love spending time with my 6-month-old daughter. She has definitely changed my perspective on what I do with free time and how I view problems, accomplishments and everyday encounters. She has been a shining star for my wife and I.

Is there somewhere you want to go that you haven’t had a chance to travel to yet?

I enjoy traveling to areas that are conducive to outdoor recreation, in particular with challenging hiking trails. Outside of the United States, I would like to visit Japan (I have always thought it is a beautiful place) and Argentina (my mother and her family are from there).
